Progress Educational Trust’s Annual Conference

‘Passport to Parenthood: The Evidence and Ethics behind Cross-Border Reproductive Care’

24 November 2010, 9.30am-5pm at the Institute of Child Health, Guildford Street, London

Cross-border reproductive care - popularly referred to as 'fertility tourism' - is the booming phenomenon of individuals and couples travelling overseas for fertility treatment.

Many patients are travelling overseas for fertility treatment and Cross-Border Reproductive Care (CBRC) raises many different ethical, legal and medical issues. A key question that the conference will address is whether CBRC is a problem or a solution. Headlines such as 'Doctors warn that NHS is picking up the bill for costly fertility tourism' (Daily Mail); 'Health risks for women seeking cheap fertility treatment abroad' (Daily Mirror) and 'Couples warned of dangers in fertility tourism' (Daily Telegraph) suggest that it is problematic. However, headlines such as 'Couples are driven to IVF tourism by ethical disparities across Europe' and 'Britons fertility tourists go east for cheaper IVF' (both from The Times) suggest that CBRC is a solution.

This PET discussion conference will explore every aspect of cross-border reproductive care. Researchers investigating the scale and causes of the phenomenon will present their findings, while experts from various disciplines will offer contrasting perspectives on the ethical, practical and legal ramifications. In the PET tradition, following introductory presentations the bulk of each session's running time will be devoted to soliciting questions and comments from the audience. The conference will ask whether cross-border reproductive care is best understood as a problem, or as a solution to a problem – join us and let us know your views.
