Why should I donate through a clinic rather than making a private arrangement or go via non-clinic linked services?
All the fertility clinics with HFEA licences must confirm to strict medical, legal and ethical standards. This ensures that everyone involved in the donation is clear about their legal position and is protected by the law. Sperm, eggs and embryo donors seen at licensed clinics must also be screened for certain medical conditions that could be passed on and for sexually transmitted diseases. This helps to ensure that babies born from donated sperm, eggs or embryos are healthy, and that there are no risks to the woman who receives them.
Donating via a licensed clinics also guarantees that there are no legal obligations to any child created from your donation. The person who received your donation (and their partner if they have one) will be the child's legal and social parent(s).
How do I find a licensed clinic?
There are 85 licensed fertility clinics in the UK but not all of them offer donation treatment.
Some clinics offer satellite services so if you can't find a clinic in your area please contact us on 0845 226 9193 and we may be able to help you further.
Please note that the NGDT does not refer to clinics.
